The X-Files

Is it about aliens?

The X-Files game is very much a "video" game. This is a 1999 point-and-click game (Myst, Riven) for PlayStation. This game can also be found on the PC and Mac. This is a review for the 4 disc PlayStation game. It has 4 discs because the video takes up space.

You play as FBI agent Craig Willmore. The story is that you must find Mulder and Scully after Skinner informs you that they are missing. This game really does seem like a true X-Files game. It has the story. The characters and video cut scenes that look like the show. What this game is trying to be is a really fun detective game with an X-Files twist. They want to put the player inside the X-Files world. A massive amount of recording and writing was done for the production of this video game. The problem is that this game is just too difficult to play on PlayStation. Clues have to be found if you want to continue the story. Some clues (such as a bullet in a wood post) are very difficult to notice, unless you spend hours trying to look for it.

The graphics are either still photos or video clips. The sound and music is very much like the TV show. The game play is good and bad. I would say mostly bad. If this game was easier to play I think most people would enjoy the story and overall game. It is just too hard to find out what to do next. Even for an X-Files fan. A strategy guide would help!

Overall, this is a unique game. It has some great ideas for what a video game can do. There are a number of game play problems that hinder the pace of the game. I can't recommend buying this game but if you get a chance to play it tell us what you think. I think the PC version is probably better.

Graphics: 9 out of 10
Music and Sound: 7 out of 10
Game play: 4 out of 10
Presentation: 8 out of 10

Overall: 5 out of 10
